Our Friend Lynn Mooney of Smith Mtn Lake Died May 4, 2008

June 2nd 1946 to May 4th 2008

Lynn Hall Mooney, 61, of Smith Mountain Lake (Wirtz), lost her courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was born on June 2, 1946 to the late Earl Jenis Hall and Elizabeth Jane Hare. Lynn is survived by her husband of 40 years, Kenneth Edward Mooney; two sons, Kevin Eric Mooney and wife, Theresa, Joshua Braxton Mooney and wife, Dawn; one daughter, Kristen Davis and husband, Greg; all of Midlothian, Virginia; eight grandchildren; sister, Lee Pearman and husband, Jack of Pulaski; mother-in-law, Eileen Mooney of Princeton, West Virginia and several nieces and nephews who she loved as if they were her own.

After graduating from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Lynn was an inspiration to thousands of students as an art teacher at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke County, and then at Manchester High School in Chesterfield County.

She retired after 33 years of teaching in 2002, and she and Ken decided to make Smith Mountain Lake their permanent home. She quickly fell in love with her new home and many new friends where she became active in The Smith Mountain Lake Women’s Club, Westlake Ladies Golf Association, The Chapter AI of PEO Sisterhood and the Smith Mountain Lake YMCA. She was a member of Trinity Ecumenical Parish Church.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish with Pastor Gary Scheidt officiating. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following the service.

Lynn’s family would like to thank all of the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Carilion who gave her the strength to fight because she considered them as her friends. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to,

It is with great excitement that we announce the 2nd Annual Wine Social will be held at The Westlake Golf & Country Club on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 5:00 PM. The theme this year will be "Wines of the Old World" featuring wines from Italy and France.

Keith Overstreet from Blue Ridge Beverage will be on hand to discuss the wines and the wine growing regions. There will be plenty of hors d'oeuvres matching the theme and all attendees will receive an 8 oz. VT etched wine glass. There will be time to mingle with old Hokie friends and to make some new ones. The chapter will also be announcing the 2008 scholarship recipients. This year there will be two scholarships awarded.

The 2007 Wine Social was a big success with 65 people in attendance and the event raised enough money for one scholarship. Bring some of your friends and let's make this year's event even more successful!!

Stay after the social for dinner at The Westlake. Chef Rosie has prepared a special menu which includes flounder stuffed with crab, slow roasted prime rib and chicken breast topped with shrimp & scallops just for this event for $18.95 plus tax and gratuity.
